If you have sprayed the counter and then found ants in two more rooms, that was not bad luck. It was the spray.
Why the can makes it worse
Ants nest in colonies, and the ones on your counter are a small foraging minority. Most consumer sprays are repellents, which ants can detect: when one walks through it, it dies, and the colony reads that as an attack on its territory. A colony under that kind of pressure splits, relocating part of itself elsewhere in the house, which is exactly how one problem in the kitchen becomes three in rooms you never eat in. Nature's Way uses baits and non-repellents instead. A non-repellent is undetectable, so the ant walks through it freely, carries it back to the nest, and the whole colony goes rather than scattering.
What that means for the first few days
A professional ant treatment can look underwhelming at first, because the ant is being used as transport rather than killed on contact. Ants still trailing on day two is often the product working exactly as intended. The one thing that undoes it is spraying a repellent over the top, so leave the trail alone once it has been treated.

Earwigs are an outdoor problem that wanders in
Earwigs live in mulch, in damp soil and in decayed wood. When they turn up in a bathroom, the reason is almost always sitting against the outside of the house: a mulch bed banked up against the wall, a woodpile, a shaded strip that never dries out. Treating the yard and garden is what fixes them. Treating the room you found one in is chasing a symptom, and it is why the same house has the same problem next spring.
Foraging in from outside
A consistent trail on the same route at the same time of day, leading to an entry point: a door threshold, a utility penetration, a crack where the slab meets the wall. Treat the exterior and the entry and the traffic stops.
Established in a wall void
Shorter trails, in more than one room, with no obvious outdoor source. That one needs the non-repellent carried inward from where the ants actually are, which means finding them first rather than treating the perimeter and hoping.
